Act #2019-476 was passed in 2019. This local Act provided authorization to the Judge of Probate to begin appointing eligible high school and college students to work at local polling places on Election Day. Each polling place is authorized to staff a maximum of two high school students to serve as unpaid student intern poll workers.

What are the qualifications?

To qualify as a Student Poll Worker Intern, students must:

  • Be recommended by a principal, other school official, or the individual responsible for the student’s home instruction program.
  • Be at least 16 years of age at the time of the election. (High school students must be classified as a junior or senior or the equivalent.)
  • Be enrolled in a public high school, an accredited private high school, home instruction program, or two-year or four-year higher education institution.
  • Be residents of the county or municipality for which the appointment is made.
  • Attend all required training for poll workers.

Student interns who work four or more hours during school hours on election day or any day of training shall be entitled to an excused absence from school.
