Absentee Voting Requirements
Pursuant to Alabama law, a registered voter is eligible to vote by absentee ballot if he or she:
- Will be out of the county or state on Election Day.
- Is physically incapacitated and will not be able to vote in person on Election Day.
- Works a required workplace shift which has at least ten (10) hours that coincide with the polling hours at the voter's regular polling place.
- Is a student at an educational institution based outside the county of the voter's permanents residence, and therefore unable to vote at his or her usual polling place on Election Day.
- Is a member of, or a spouse of, the armed forces of the United States or is otherwise entitled to vote by absentee pursuant to the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, 42 U.S.C. 1973ff. - Has been appointed as an election officer at a polling place which is not the voter's regular polling place.
Requesting an Absentee Ballot
In order to vote absentee, a voter must apply for an absentee ballot. A voter may apply for an absentee ballot in one of the following ways:
- Visit the Montgomery Absentee Voting Office, located in the Montgomery County Courthouse at 251 S. Lawrence Street
- Download an Absentee Ballot Application. The applications should be mailed seven (7) days prior to the election to:

- Requesting an Absentee Ballot through mail by calling the Montgomery Absentee Office at (334) 832-1281
- If needed, you may download an Application for Emergency Absentee Ballot.
- Emergency Absentee Ballot Applications can be requested after the regular absentee deadline but must be before 5:00 p.m. on the day before the election if the voter:
- Has a medical emergency that requires treatment from a licensed physician
- Has a business emergency that requires the voter to be out-of-county on the day of the election. *Note - the ballot must be turned in within five (5) days prior to the election.
Returning an Absentee Ballot or Application
Absentee Ballot Applications and voted absentee ballots may be returned by U.S. Mail to the Absentee Election Manager.
Note, however, that Absentee Ballot Applications returned by mail may only be accepted if returned one per envelope and within seven (7) days prior to the election. These applications may be returned to:

Absentee Ballot Applications and voted absentee ballots may be returned by hand delivery (251 S. Lawrence Street), but only from the voter whose name appears on such materials.
- When hand delivering an Absentee Ballot Application or voted absentee ballot, the Absentee Election Manager will require the voter to present an acceptable form of identification.
